Strength Training FAQs

Is Woodbury Barbell a public gym?

No. Woodbury Barbell is a private coaching gym located in Woodbury, Minnesota.


All clients train with a coach. We do not offer open-gym memberships at this time. 


This allows us to maintain a focused, safe, and supportive training environment where every client receives guidance and support.

Do I need prior lifting experience?

No. Many of our clients begin with no prior strength training experience.


Every session is fully coached. Technique, breathing, balance, and body positioning are taught step by step. The weight starts where you are and progresses gradually.

Is barbell training safe for beginners and adults over 50?

Yes — when properly coached, barbell training is safe and highly effective for beginners and adults over 50.


In fact, it is one of the most effective ways to:


  • Prevent muscle loss
     
  • Improve connective tissue health
     
  • Increase bone density
     
  • Maintain independence
     

Heavy weights are not dangerous when taught correctly.

Who is this program best suited for?

Most of our clients are parents, active adults, and adults in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond who want to stay strong, capable and independent for the long run.


This program works best for people who:

  • want to become stronger for everyday life
  • value coaching and proper technique
  • are willing to practice a few key lifts consistently 
  • are thinking about long-term health and strength


If that sounds like you, you'll likely do very well here.


What lifts do you teach?

 We primarily coach four main barbell lifts:


  • Squat
     
  • Deadlift
     
  • Bench Press
     
  • Overhead Press
     

These lifts are chosen because they directly match everyday human movement and allow for safe, progressive strength gains over time.

How often should I train to see results?

Most clients train two to three times per week. This provides enough stimulus for progress while allowing proper recovery.

Consistency over time is what produces the best results.

Do I need to schedule training sessions in advance?

Yes. Most clients schedule their training sessions in advance and train two or three times per week at consistent times.


This helps maintain progress, ensures a spot in the schedule, and allows training to become a regular part of your weekly routine. 

Do I need to commit to long-term training?

There's no long-term contract required, but strength training works best when practiced consistently over time.


Most clients train with a coach two or three times per week and stay consistent for months and years as they continue to build strength.


Our goal is not short-term workouts, but helping you stay strong, capable, and independent for the long run. 

Will my workouts change every session?

No. Strength training works best when the same foundational movements are practiced consistently. At Woodbury Barbell, we focus on a small number of key barbell lifts and gradually increase the weight over time. This allows you to improve technique, build strength safely, and see measurable progress.


The workouts evolve as you get stronger, but the core movements remail consistent so you can continue building strength safely and steadily. 


How much does working with a coach cost at Woodbury Barbell?

Most gyms charge $85–$125 per personal training session, often on top of a monthly membership fee.


At Woodbury Barbell, you can work with a coach twice per week for $49 per session, with no additional membership fee. A third weekly training session can be added for only $25.
