Parents often ask whether strength training will actually help their child’s performance — and whether it’s safe.
When strength training is taught correctly, athletes become more powerful, more resilient, and better prepared for the physical demands of their sport. Stronger athletes can sprint faster, jump higher, and better control their bodies on the field, court, or ice.
Our goal when working with youth athletes is to build strength using a small number of fundamental barbell lifts — the squat, press, bench press, and deadlift.
We do not try to make strength training look like their sport.
Athletes train here to become stronger, then practice their sport separately using that strength. Strength training and sport practice serve different purposes and should not be combined.
Every session is coached and closely supervised. Technique, movement quality, and appropriate loading always come first.
Yes — when properly coached and supervised.
At Woodbury Barbell, youth athletes are taught correct movement patterns, controlled technique, and appropriate loading based on age, size, and experience. There is no max-out lifting and no unsupervised training.
Our priority is building a strong foundation that supports long-term athletic development and reduces injury risk.
